Meadowmat Cottage Garden – Do you enjoy seeing nodding flower heads, buzzing bees and vibrant colours combined with swaying grasses? Then you’ll love Meadowmat Cottage Garden!

Cottage Garden is a beautiful combination of native wildflowers and grasses which can create a vibrant and bee-friendly cottage garden. A handy garden design tip is to lay the Cottage Garden on top of Spring and Summer flowering bulbs for an even longer flowering period. This ensures stunning turf for a dazzling looking garden in time for summer!

What’s Included

Cottage Garden is mainly created using perennial plant species. These are plants that will grow back year after year, as long as they enjoy the conditions in your garden. Therefore, this determines the importance of maintaining your garden and choosing the most suitable turf.

The mix also includes some annual and bi-annual flowering species. Some give a pop of colour while the perennials are blooming and some just because of their sheer beauty. However, not all of the flowers will appear every year but when they do, you’ll realise why Cottage Garden is worthwhile.

Flowering

The flowering time for Cottage Garden is late Spring until early Autumn, so it’s perfect for when you want to show your garden in its best light throughout Spring, Summer and even during the colder months!

We would never want your Cottage Garden to be damaged in transit so we ensure that the plants are mowed before harvest and despatch. Your product is unlikely to be in flower when it is delivered to you.

Installation

You can install Cottage Garden all year round. For a burst of colour in time for Summer, we suggest that you lay Meadowmat® before the end of March to allow plants to establish.

It takes two slabs of Cottage Garden Meadowmat® wildflower turf to cover 1 square metre of prepared soil. It can be heavy – especially when it’s wet, so it’s a good idea to get some help when manoeuvring and laying it!

The images shown are just to give you an idea of how Cottage Garden looks when in bloom, but it can be presented differently depending on the look of your garden and your level of maintenance. Therefore, the balance of plant species and the flowering time will be different in every single garden giving you endless possibilities! However, it can also depend on soil type, weather conditions, pollinator populations and management style. Then, simply place each piece of Meadowmat® onto prepared soil, ensuring the roots have contact with the ground, water it and keep the soil moist until the plants are well established!

Maintenance

Maintaining Cottage Garden is easy and rewarding. Unlike many herbaceous flower borders, Cottage Garden doesn’t want to be fed, mulched, staked or sprayed. Simply leave it to grow unchecked between March and September. You may like to extend the flowering season by deadheading the plants, but this is not essential. At the end of summer, when all the flowers have faded, you can be ruthless and deadhead as much as you need. Cut your Cottage Garden back to a height of 10 – 15 cm and put all of that unwanted vegetation on to the compost heap. If your garden soil is quite fertile, you may need to trim it a couple of times during the autumn and winter, just to keep it neat.

Cottage Garden is fairly easy-going provided it has plenty of sunshine and a moist, but whilst ensuring well-drained soil. It’s great in deep planters, raised beds, flower borders or as an alternative to your original lawn! The plants in this Meadowmat® like a fairly neutral pH but can adapt to anything but the most acidic or alkaline soils.

To maintain the balance of grasses to flowering plants, we highly recommend installing Cottage Garden onto our Low Fertility Soil which you can buy here.

Richer soils tend to encourage lots of grasses and over time these can crowd out the flowering plants in Meadowmat®, leaving you with a less colourful display.

Coverage

Each slab of Cottage Garden wildflower turf measures 500mm (19.6″) wide by 1000mm (39.2″) long so two slabs will cover 1m².

Please note this product is sold per square metre.

Want to grow your own from Seed?

The mix of wildflowers found in Cottage Garden Meadowmat Wildflower Turf is also available as a seed mix – if you would like to grow your own from scratch or you just want to add some extra colour.

What’s In Meadowmat Cottage Garden?

Please note, percentages refer to the weight of the seed in the growing mix and do not necessarily reflect the proportions of mature plants.

5% native grasses

Grasses fill in any gaps between plants and provide activity outside of the flowering season. They also reduce moisture from the soil, so you’ll also be helping wildlife out with a place to stay in the colder months!

The 2 native grasses in Cottage Garden Wildflower Turf are Tufted hair grass and Brown top bent grass.

95% Flowering Plants

The other 95% of Cottage Garden Mix features 30 flowering plants, providing a joyous display of summer colour! These wildflowers are:

Perishable living products should be installed on the day of delivery. In the unlikely event that your product does not arrive in good condition please get in touch immediately with photos showing the issue.

The actual percentage of each species contained may vary due to environmental factors. Turfonline makes every effort to ensure wildflower products are free from weeds and pests, however due to the natural way in which these products are grown we cannot guarantee they are 100% pest  free on delivery. It is unlikely that you will see every species that is listed. The variation of species present has been developed to suit a wide variety of soils and environmental conditions. This will result in a product that will adapt to individual settings which may mean some species are more successful than others. Contains annual and perennial species.  If installed after March many species may not flower during the first year.

On our bulky items such as Turf, Wildflower Turf, Sedum and Soils you can select your preferred delivery date from a calendar during the checkout process.
Order enough and then some - With the season on the point of kicking off – although there was snow this morning - we have had a spate of enquiries and orders recently for turf and wildflower turf. This is a good thing, but I think I should add in a bit of advice. Firstly, please, please, please measure very carefully. Make sure that you have added in at least 5% extra to cover all the edges and extra bits that you will need. Our website has a turf calculator to help you work out exactly how much you will need. BUT, and it’s a big BUT – please remember that it is always better to have some turf left over rather than having to order more. Our turf is delivered on pallets so having to order extra turf as a new order will mean new harvest, new transport and a new delivery cost. Adding an extra roll of turf to your order to make sure you have enough is always going to be cheaper than having to order more. Adding an extra roll is always going to be more cost-effective. Otherwise, all the usual rules apply – please lay your turf on the day it arrives. If you’re working with wildflower turf, it’s a lot easier with two people and please focus on watering once your turf is down. Wee can help with all of these – there are tools here on the website to help along with advice on looking after your new lawn or Meadowmat wildflower meadow.
Some of our Wildflower products do contain a Biodegradable reinforcement net for stability.
Can you take my pallet away? Unfortunately not - please can you reuse or recycle.
  • For palletised goods our standard service will be delivered between 8am - 8pm. We are requested not to contact the delivery depot for ETAs until the afternoon. Therefore if your delivery is not with you by around 2-3pm please get in touch and we can find out what time it should be with you.
  • If you selected a pre 11am delivery, this should be with you from 8am - 11am. If in the unlikely event that your order is not with you within this time frame, please contact us.
  • If you selected a pre 2pm delivery, this should be with you from 8am - 2pm. If in the unlikely event that your order is not with you within this time frame, please contact us.
  • Our Saturday deliveries are normally delivered between the hours of 8am - 2pm. During busy times this may be extended but should be with you before 4pm.
  • If your item is arriving via a parcel carrier you should receive a text message from the carrier with an ETA.
  • With all of the services mentioned above, we are unable to provide an ETA until the day of delivery.

For all palletised goods, during the checkout process you can select your required delivery date along with any timed upgrades. For parcels, these are despatched on the next business day.

Bulky items like Turf, Topsoil and Wildflower Turf can be delivered Tuesday to Friday. We can also offer deliveries on Saturdays for an additional charge. Please select your preferred delivery date from the available dates during the checkout process. This is dependent on the delivery postcode.
What delivery services do you offer? - Standard all day delivery is included in the price for most areas of the UK. There are surcharges for some areas and options to upgrade to timed services for an additional cost.
We offer kerbside delivery, so pallets are usually left on the road to the front of your property. We can occasionally deliver to your driveway if it is flat, level and a solid surface, and if the kerb is dropped enough for a pallet truck to roll over it whilst fully loaded.
How tall does Meadowmat grow? - This depends on the variety. A flowering height of 30-90cm is common. All of our wildflower products are trimmed prior to despatch to protect the plants from damage in transit. The height at despatch is approximately 10cm. For more information about specific varieties visit the product page on our website.

Your Delivery

Turf Online aims to give its customers the best possible experience by delivering the best quality products for sale in the UK. Therefore, all our perishable products are harvested fresh to order the day before delivery!

Delivery charges and services vary by different types of turf and delivery location. Charges are confirmed at checkout before payment. If your order includes grass turf, topsoil, Wildflower Turf or Sedum mats, you can choose your delivery day. You should arrange for live products to be delivered on the day you will lay them. Reducing the amount of time the product is stored means significantly less potential nuisance when it comes to installation; certain issues will not have had a chance to rise. All other products are delivered within 5 working days (or usually sooner!).

How Is Your Product Delivered?

We recommend that you only make arrangements for tradespeople to carry out work on your behalf after your turf or other products have been delivered.

PLEASE NOTE: Turf, Wildflower Turf, Sedum Mats and bulk Bag products are delivered on a pallet and can only be delivered to the kerbside.

Most of our products for sale in the UK will be delivered by being transported by a pallet courier that primarily uses 18-tonne rigid trucks that are built for reaching the majority of UK addresses. However, it is possible that your delivery could be made on a larger vehicle. If access or other restrictions prevent vehicles above a certain size reaching your address, or there are other offloading or parking restrictions which could affect the delivery, let us know in the delivery notes section of checkout so that special delivery arrangements can be made. Please make sure you double check the delivery postcode and address carefully as after your order has been shipped, it is likely we will not be able to make any amendments to your order or address.

Delivery is unloaded using a manual pallet trolley which is lowered to the road by the tail lift on the truck. Unfortunately, we do not offer Hiab (truck-mounted crane) deliveries. To offload the pallet, the surface must be flat and level. Since Turf, Wildflower Turf, Sedum and topsoil can be heavy, and the pallet trolley pulled by the driver has small wheels, pallets cannot be delivered onto soil, grass or gravel – a tarmac or paved surface is required.

Kerbside delivery means that our products for sale in the UK is delivered as close as possible to the delivery address you provide. Our helpful drivers will do their best to place your delivery where you wish, such as a driveway, but this is at their discretion. If your delivery address is hard to find or the property is a new build, consider using what3words to pinpoint your delivery location. More information on what3words can be found in our Help Centre.

For more information on how The Pallet Network delivers our different types of products, please watch this short video.

What Issues Could Arise With Delivery?

If your product delivery cannot be made due to a reason you failed to make us aware of, the full cost of distribution and products will still be charged to you. We are proud that most of our turf deliveries arrive on time. Sometimes, circumstances beyond our control (extreme weather, road accidents, vehicle breakdowns or IT failures) can delay delivery, but we will make every effort to keep you updated in such an event.
