Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust provides well-established mental health services for older adults who live in Sandwell. This includes a range of community services, therapeutic and recovery services, outpatient appointments and two inpatient wards, all delivered from the Edward Street Hospital.
The site has undergone a major refurbishment with a budget of close to £50m as part of a national programme to make wards with shared sleeping arrangements a thing of the past.
The plan was to provide modern, en-suite accommodation for patients, and develop a therapy hub to support treatment and recovery.
The building works started in autumn 2023 and were completed in the summer of 2025.
The plan also included additional benefits to help boost employment skills and opportunities for the local people of Sandwell. To that end the construction company delivering the project, Integrated Health Projects (IHP), the joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine announced a work experience initiative aimed to boost community engagement and skills development.

In addition to this, the project has the potential to impact the community beyond the refurbishment changes and enhancements to the healthcare offer, by training and inspiring the next generation on their pursuit of a career in construction.
The landscaping element was handled by Jack Moody Group and involved a broad spectrum of landscaping and planting including: –
- Paving to first floor terrace; foil layer, protection mat, drainage board, drainage aggregate, fleece, mortar and Braemar paving
- 15 large multi-stem, rootball trees
- 7 different planting mixes including native and ornamental grasses, perennials, shrubs and ground cover.
- Wildflower turf
- Post and wire fencing
- Raised timber allotment planters
So not surprisingly it is the wildflower turf that involved Harrowden. Across two orders we supplied 300m of Meadowmat Traditional wildflower turf as well as 270m of lawn turf.
