Time to feed your sedum
Sedums (also called stonecrops) are tough, low-maintenance succulents, but they do benefit from the right kind of feeding.
Whilst they typically don’t require that much maintenance, green roofs and sedum plants do need fertiliser to remain healthy all year round. So, we have created our own specially formulated fertiliser.
This green roof fertiliser features a completely new formula that means it can cover up to 65 square metres, helping to ensure that your living roof is as strong and healthy as possible. But make sure you use the right mix and formula. Our sedum feed is a slow release organic feed that has been formulated specifically for healthy and robust flowers. As such, it helps to maximise the benefits for any living roof.
Benefits of using a Green Roof Feed
Our specifically formulated fertiliser offers a wealth of advantages for green roofing like biodiversity, insulation, rainwater amelioration, and oxygen production. As the plants found on a green roof typically have a relatively shallow layer of growing medium, it is imperative that there is a robust, healthy plant layer. Since these green roof plants do not have the same access to water and nutrients as those at ground level, sedum fertiliser must be used to keep them healthy. It’s important to make sure that these plants are well nourished so that they will be able to withstand summertime droughts and winter frosts.

The Best Time to Feed Sedum
-
Spring (after new growth appears):
This is the ideal time, as sedum is waking up from being dormant and actively putting out new leaves and stems. A light feeding helps kick-start healthy growth. -
Mid-Summer (optional):
A second, light feeding can support flowering and maintain vigour, especially for taller sedum varieties.
But avoid heavy feeding late in the season—too much nitrogen then can encourage weak, floppy growth just before dormancy.
Benefits of Feeding Sedum
-
Encourages strong, compact growth (especially important for tall sedums like Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’, which can flop if growth is weak).
-
Enhances flowering—brighter, fuller blooms in summer and fall.
-
Improves resilience to drought, heat, and disease stress.
-
Supports root development, especially for new plantings.
🌿 Tips on Fertiliser Use
-
Type: Use a balanced, diluted fertiliser (10-10-10 or 20-20-20 at ¼ to ½ strength) or a slow-release fertiliser in spring.
-
Frequency: Once in spring is often enough; twice if growth is slow or soil is very poor.
-
Caution: Avoid overfeeding. Sedums thrive in lean soil—too much fertiliser leads to soft, leggy stems and fewer flowers.
In short:
Feed once in spring, maybe again in midsummer, using a light hand. You’ll get sturdier plants, richer colour, and more flowers without compromising their naturally tough character.
