The European or common hornbeam is a species of tree in the birch family Betulaceae, native to Western Asia and central, eastern, and southern Europe, including southern England. It requires a warm climate for good growth and occurs only at elevations up to 1,000 metres (3,281 ft). It grows in mixed stands with oak, and in some areas beech.
It is a deciduous small to medium-size tree reaching heights of 15–25 metres (49–82 ft), rarely 30 m. The bark is smooth and greenish grey, even in old trees. The buds, unlike those of the beech, are 10 mm (0.39 in) long at the most and pressed close to the twig. The leaves are alternate, 4–9 cm (1.6–3.5 in) long, with prominent veins giving a distinctive corrugated texture, and a serrated margin.
Because it stands up well to cutting back and has dense foliage, it has been much used in landscape gardening, mainly as tall hedges and for topiary. It was the classic tree used in French formal gardens.
They are found on soils with moderate clay content and avoid soils with particularly high or low clay content. Carpinus betulus likes full sun or partial shade, moderate soil fertility and moisture. It has a shallow, wide-spreading root system and is marked by the production of stump sprouts when cut back.

Soil:
The Mobilane Green Screen needs a humus rich soil suitable for planting shrubs. The trench must be at least 40 cm deep. The soil must be water permeable with good drainage. The soil must be free of debris and not have impermeable clay layers to allow the plant roots to grow down deep into the ground.
There should be no barriers (plastic sheets, concrete slabs for example) to prevent the establishment of a healthy root system. In cases where the soil is not rich in humus, a good quality compost should be added.
Watering, Pruning & Fertilising:
Don’t forget to look after your new hedge though. Depending on the season of planting, fertiliser will be needed. During the first year after planting, regular watering is also advised. The best pruning months are April/May and September/October.
Brackets:
There are two types of brackets available, a wall mount bracket for attaching to a flat surface and a post bracket which can be used with most types of fence posts.
- Screens of 220 cm height require 6 brackets per screen,
- Screens of 180 cm height require 4 brackets per screen,
- Screens of 100 cm height require 4 brackets per screen.
Installation:

- Leave about 3 cm between the posts and the screen to allow the plant stems to swell between the iron grid of the screen and the posts.
- The measurements between the posts must adhere to a centre-to-centre distance of 130 to 132 cm.
- Please note that for the total length of the installation there is always at least one more post needed than the number of screens used.
