Meadowmat Birds and Bees

We’ve put together a mix of 41 native British wildflowers and 4 grasses that will encourage a wide variety of wildlife into your garden.

Besides being a joy to share your space with, Birds and Bees Meadowmat® has many features to actively support biodiversity.

  • A long flowering period. Which means that it supplies pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies, hoverflies and moths all through the Spring and Summer months and well into Autumn too.
  • Source of food for caterpillars and therefore a vital part of butterfly and moth life cycles.
  • Autumn seed heads and a ready supply of insects and larvae for birds.
  • For the human visitors to your garden, there are colourful flowers, gently billowing grasses and the fascination of watching wild creatures going about their everyday life.

What’s not to like?

Meadowmat Birds & Bees – Key Points

  • Birds and Bees contains mostly perennial plant species. Install it once and the plants will grow back year after year (provided the conditions are right).
  • Not all of the flowering species are perennial. We’ve included some annual and bi-annuals too. These may not appear every year.
  • Flowering Time: March– September (depending on local weather conditions).
  • Birds and Bees will not be in flower when it is delivered to you. We trim the plants before despatch to protect them from damage in transit.
  • Birds and Bees can be installed at any time of year. However, to be certain of seeing flowers in its first summer, we recommend installing it before the end of March.
  • Each roll of Birds and Bees covers 1 square metre of prepared soil and can be quite heavy. We recommend having two people to install it.
  • Your Meadowmat® will change appearance from year to year because the balance of plant species is affected by weather, soil type and management.

What is Birds and Bees Meadowmat®?

Meadowmat®, it’s an ingenious outdoor landscaping material that helps you to grow a mature wildflower meadow in the least time possible. It’s far more reliable than sowing seed and quicker and easier than plug planting. Think of Meadowmat® as a flower garden on a roll. Lay Meadowmat® in a similar way to lawn turf, but maintain it like a wildflower meadow.

So, it’s easy to look after Birds and Bees. Once it has established it can be left to grow unchecked all through Spring, Summer and Autumn. So, there’s no need for mowing, feeding, deadheading or pest control. Mother Nature will take care of everything for you. Towards the end of Winter, (usually late February) or when all of the seed-heads have been eaten by birds, cut your Birds and Bees  back to a height of 10cm. Then, be sure to shake any seeds on the area before taking away all of the clippings. Sometimes, during a wet mild Summer, you may find that some of the plants fall over – if this happens, simply trim them back to tidy them.

Growing Meadowmat Birds and Bees – Soil and Aspect

Birds and Bees prefers to grow in full sun and moist, but well drained low fertility soil. It is happy on level surfaces or slopes. Happiest in a fairly neutral pH but will tolerate all but the most acidic or alkaline soils.

For best results, install your Birds and Bees onto our Low Fertility Soil. Ordinary garden soil is usually high in the plant nutrients that grasses love. It is quite likely that after a few months the grasses will become so strong that they outcompete many of the flowering plants. The result will be a beautifully grassy meadow but with less colour than you perhaps hoped for.

What’s In Meadowmat Birds and Bees?

Please note, percentages refer to the weight of the seed in the growing mix and do not necessarily reflect the proportions of mature plants.

10% native grasses

Native grasses look great alongside wildflowers. Not only that, they provide dense soil coverage to preserve water in the soil. Grasses also provide shelter for insects, food for birds and perches for butterflies:

Our Meadowmat Birds & Bees contains the following native grasses:

Order enough and then some - With the season on the point of kicking off – although there was snow this morning - we have had a spate of enquiries and orders recently for turf and wildflower turf. This is a good thing, but I think I should add in a bit of advice. Firstly, please, please, please measure very carefully. Make sure that you have added in at least 5% extra to cover all the edges and extra bits that you will need. Our website has a turf calculator to help you work out exactly how much you will need. BUT, and it’s a big BUT – please remember that it is always better to have some turf left over rather than having to order more. Our turf is delivered on pallets so having to order extra turf as a new order will mean new harvest, new transport and a new delivery cost. Adding an extra roll of turf to your order to make sure you have enough is always going to be cheaper than having to order more. Adding an extra roll is always going to be more cost-effective. Otherwise, all the usual rules apply – please lay your turf on the day it arrives. If you’re working with wildflower turf, it’s a lot easier with two people and please focus on watering once your turf is down. Wee can help with all of these – there are tools here on the website to help along with advice on looking after your new lawn or Meadowmat wildflower meadow.
Some of our Wildflower products do contain a Biodegradable reinforcement net for stability.
Can you take my pallet away? Unfortunately not - please can you reuse or recycle.
What time will my delivery be made? The anytime service can be delivered between 8am and 8pm. There are a number of upgrade options available at the checkout.
Bulky items like Turf, Topsoil and Wildflower Turf can be delivered Tuesday to Friday. We can also offer deliveries on Saturdays for an additional charge. For orders placed before 10am we can even offer a next day delivery. Please select your preferred delivery date from the available dates during the checkout process. This is dependent on the delivery postcode.
What delivery services do you offer? - Standard all day delivery is included in the price for most areas of the UK. There are surcharges for some areas and options to upgrade to timed services for an additional cost.
We offer kerbside delivery, so pallets are usually left on the road to the front of your property. We can occasionally deliver to your driveway if it is flat, level and a solid surface, and if the kerb is dropped enough for a pallet truck to roll over it whilst fully loaded.
How tall does Meadowmat grow? - This depends on the variety. A flowering height of 30-90cm is common. All of our wildflower products are trimmed prior to despatch to protect the plants from damage in transit. The height at despatch is approximately 10cm. For more information about specific varieties visit the product page on our website.
Our Wildflower Turf and Sedum products are perfect for attracting pollinators.

Your Delivery

Turf Online aims to give its customers the best possible experience by delivering the best quality products for sale in the UK. Therefore, all our perishable products are harvested fresh to order the day before delivery, and we even accept orders for next-day delivery!

Delivery charges and services vary by different types of turf and delivery location. Charges are confirmed at checkout before payment. If your order includes grass turf, topsoil, Wildflower Turf or Sedum mats, you can choose your delivery day. You should arrange for live products to be delivered on the day you will lay them. Reducing the amount of time the product is stored means significantly less potential nuisance when it comes to installation; certain issues will not have had a chance to rise. All other products are delivered within 5 working days (or usually sooner!).

How Is Your Product Delivered?

We recommend that you only make arrangements for tradespeople to carry out work on your behalf after your turf or other products have been delivered.

PLEASE NOTE: Turf, Wildflower Turf, Sedum Mats and bulk Bag products are delivered on a pallet and can only be delivered to the kerbside.

Most of our products for sale in the UK will be delivered by being transported by a pallet courier that primarily uses 18-tonne rigid trucks that are built for reaching the majority of UK addresses. However, it is possible that your delivery could be made on a larger vehicle. If access or other restrictions prevent vehicles above a certain size reaching your address, or there are other offloading or parking restrictions which could affect the delivery, let us know in the delivery notes section of checkout so that special delivery arrangements can be made. Please make sure you double check the delivery postcode and address carefully as after your order has been shipped, it is likely we will not be able to make any amendments to your order or address.

Delivery is unloaded using a manual pallet trolley which is lowered to the road by the tail lift on the truck. Unfortunately, we do not offer Hiab (truck-mounted crane) deliveries. To offload the pallet, the surface must be flat and level. Since Turf, Wildflower Turf, Sedum and topsoil can be heavy, and the pallet trolley pulled by the driver has small wheels, pallets cannot be delivered onto soil, grass or gravel – a tarmac or paved surface is required.

Kerbside delivery means that our products for sale in the UK is delivered as close as possible to the delivery address you provide. Our helpful drivers will do their best to place your delivery where you wish, such as a driveway, but this is at their discretion. If your delivery address is hard to find or the property is a new build, consider using what3words to pinpoint your delivery location. More information on what3words can be found in our Help Centre.

For more information on how The Pallet Network delivers our different types of products, please watch this short video.

What Issues Could Arise With Delivery?

If your product delivery cannot be made due to a reason you failed to make us aware of, the full cost of distribution and products will still be charged to you. We are proud that most of our turf deliveries arrive on time. Sometimes, circumstances beyond our control (extreme weather, road accidents, vehicle breakdowns or IT failures) can delay delivery, but we will make every effort to keep you updated in such an event.
