Woodland Shade Meadowmat® is a blend of 35 native wildflowers and 3 grasses typically found growing in woodland margins and hedgerows.
Ideal for those tricky spots in the garden where many garden flowers flounder. Please bear in mind though that Woodland Shade cannot tolerate really deep shade. Dappled shade is OK but it definitely won’t thrive where the sun never shines. Woodland Shade will bring a splash of colour and serenity into your life alongside the knowledge that you are providing valuable wildlife habitat.
Key Points
All but one of the plant species in Woodland Shade Meadowmat® are perennial. That means that you will be enjoy them every year without replanting or reseeding……provided of course they are enjoying the conditions in your garden!
Flowering Time: April – October (depending on local weather conditions) with the strongest flush of flowers in late Spring.
Although any type of Meadowmat® seed can be sown at any time of year, Autumn is a great time of year to sow Woodland Shade seed. That way the plants can root in over winter and be ready to bloom in early spring.
Be prepared to be amazed! Meadowmat® actually changes appearance every year. Each plant species in the seed-mix responds differently to weather and of course we get different weather every year. You will never be bored!
What is Meadowmat®?
Woodland Shade asks for a largely hands-off and rather eco-friendly style of gardening. So, there's no need for fertilisers and sprays, these plants are self-sufficient. Leave to grow unchecked between February and August. The biggest burst of the flowers will appear in May followed by smatterings of colour through Summer. At the end of Summer, use a scythe to take off the vegetation – leave just 10 – 15 cm to re-grow and take away all of the trimmings. Then, mow once or twice in Autumn to remove excess growth and let it overwinter. If you are growing Woodland Shade under trees, please remove fallen leaves in Autumn.
Finding the right place to grow Meadowmat Woodland Shade
Woodland Shade prefers to grow in partial shade and moist, but well drained low fertility soil. Please avoid deep shade – the plants do need some daylight in order to thrive. Happiest in a fairly neutral pH but will tolerate all but the most acidic or alkaline soils.
To get the best from your Meadowmat®, install onto our Low Fertility Soil. This helps to regulate the growth of the grasses so that the flowering plants can thrive.
Sowing Instructions
Dig over the area and thoroughly rake to remove any debris and create a fine tilth. If your garden soil is rich in nutrients, remove as much of it as you can and replace it with low nutrient topsoil.
Sow the seeds where you want them to grow. The recommended rate for Meadowmat wildflower seed is 30g/m². Sprinkle the seed as evenly as possible being careful not to sow seeds too thickly - the plants will need plenty of room to grow.
Newly sown wildflower seed needs light and water to germinate. Do not cover the seed. Water lightly - be careful not to wash them away! Protect from birds. For best results, keep the soil and seeds moist until the plants have germinated and are well established.
Contains Rehofix bulking granules to ensure even sowing.
Shake well before use
Don't have time to wait for it to grow?
The mix of wildflowers which feature in this seed mix are also available as an “instant” wildflower turf which can bring you all the colour of wildflowers without the wait!

30% native grasses
Pretty grasses to help retain soil moisture and create wildlife habitat.

The actual percentage of each species contained may vary due to environmental factors. Turfonline makes every effort to ensure wildflower products are free from weeds and pests, however due to the natural way in which these products are grown we cannot guarantee they are 100% pest free on delivery. It is unlikely that you will see every species that is listed. The variation of species present has been developed to suit a wide variety of soils and environmental conditions. This will result in a product that will adapt to individual settings which may mean some species are more successful than others. Contains annual and perennial species. If installed after March many species may not flower during the first year.
The 22 species of UK native wildflowers and grasses in Heritage Meadowmat® have proved to us that they adapt well to growing in shallow, poor nutrient soils with very little human intervention.
Heritage Meadowmat® was originally developed to meet the demand for a quick-to-install green roofing material with instant plant coverage. It does that job admirably and has brought biodiversity to some amazing living roofs throughout the UK. However, we rather like the way it happily brings a splash of colour to gardens – and so do the butterflies, moths and bees!
Key Points
Most of the plant species in our Heritage mix are perennial. That means that if they are happy on your roof or in your garden and will grow back year after year.
Flowering Time: March – October (depending on local weather conditions).
Your Heritage Meadowmat® will be mown before harvest so that plants are not damaged during transportation. The flowering plants will not be blooming when it is delivered
Depending on the time of year it can take a few weeks for Meadowmat® to establish, grow and start blooming. Although Meadowmat® can be installed at any time of year, if you would like it to flower in its first summer we recommend installing it before the end of March.
It takes two slabs of Heritage Meadowmat® to cover 1 square metre. If you are installing on a roof you may need mechanical lifting gear as each slab can be quite heavy.
For rooftop applications, please install our Heritage Meadowmat® onto a good green roof substrate at least 150mm deep.
Each of the species will respond differently to soil type, local weather conditions and care regimes. In fact, the balance of species changes from year to year which means that your Meadowmat® will continue to fascinate you with every season.
What is Meadowmat®?
Meadowmat® is a vegetation blanket consisting of a thin layer of growing medium supporting a vibrant plant population. To install Meadowmat® , simply place each slab onto a growing medium at least 15cm deep and keep well-watered until the roots are embedded deeply into their bed. For green roofing applications, use green roof substrate as your growing medium. On the ground, we recommend installing onto our Low Fertility Soil.
The maintenance regime for Heritage Meadowmat® is simple and undemanding. Plants can be left to grow and flower unchecked between March and August. At the end of summer, use a scythe to cut the vegetation back to a height of between 10 and 15 cm (4 – 6 inches). If it is practical, leave the spent vegetation on the surface for a couple of days so that seeds can fall back into the sward. After which take it away (it makes great compost!).
There is a lot more information on installing and maintaining Meadowmat® in our blog and in the Help & Advice sections of our website.
Where to Grow Heritage Meadowmat® – Soil Type and Aspect
The plants in Heritage Meadowmat® enjoy growing in full sun and a well-drained (but not too dry!) growing medium.
For roof applications: Please install onto at least 150mm depth of green roof substrate.
Please note: Whilst normal garden soil will support Heritage Meadowmat® the nutrient levels do tend to promote extra-strong growth in the grasses. The grasses are beautiful but may outcompete the flowering plants meaning that over time your Meadowmat® becomes less colourful. This is why we recommend installing it onto subsoil or Low Fertility Soil.
Coverage
Each slab of Heritage measures 500mm (19.6″) wide by 1000mm (39.2″) long so two slabs will cover 1m².
Please note this product is sold per square metre.

Yellow Toadflax Linaria vulgaris - Known as Common Toadflax, Yellow toadflax or butter and eggs. The plant is widespread on rural spots, along roads, in dunes, and on disturbed and cultivated land. Because the flower is largely closed by its underlip, pollination requires strong insects such as bees and bumblebees. While most commonly found as a wildflower, toadflax is sometimes cultivated for cut flowers. This plant has also been used in folk medicine for a variety of ailments. A tea made from the leaves was taken as a laxative and strong diuretic as well as for jaundice, dropsy, and enteritis with drowsiness. For skin diseases and piles, either a leaf tea or an ointment made from the flowers was used. In addition, a tea made in milk instead of water has been used as an insecticide. It is confirmed to have diuretic and fever-reducing properties.

What’s not to like?
Meadowmat Birds & Bees - Key Points
Birds and Bees contains mostly perennial plant species. So, grow it once and the plants will grow back year after year (provided the conditions are right).
But not all of the flowering species are perennial. We’ve included some annual and bi-annuals too. These may not appear every year.
Flowering Time: March– September (depending on local weather conditions).
Birds and Bees seed can be sown at any time of year. However, to be certain of seeing flowers in its first summer, we recommend sowing seed before the end of March.
Your Meadowmat® will change appearance from year to year because the balance of plant species is affected by weather, soil type and management.
Maintenance
It’s easy to look after Birds and Bees. Once it has established it can be left to grow unchecked all through Spring, Summer and Autumn. So, there’s no need for mowing, feeding, deadheading or pest control. Mother Nature will take care of everything for you. Towards the end of Winter, (usually late February) or when all of the seed-heads have been eaten by birds, cut your Birds and Bees back to a height of 10cm. Then, be sure to shake any seeds on the area before taking away all of the clippings. Sometimes, during a wet mild Summer, you may find that some of the plants fall over – if this happens, simply trim them back to tidy them.
Growing Meadowmat Birds and Bees – Soil and Aspect
Birds and Bees prefers to grow in full sun and moist, but well drained low fertility soil. It is happy on level surfaces or slopes. Happiest in a fairly neutral pH but will tolerate all but the most acidic or alkaline soils.
For best results, sow your Birds and Bees seed onto our Low Fertility Soil. Ordinary garden soil is usually high in the plant nutrients that grasses love. It is quite likely that after a few months the grasses will become so strong that they outcompete many of the flowering plants. The result will be a beautifully grassy meadow but with less colour than you perhaps hoped for.
Sowing Instructions
First, dig over the area and thoroughly rake to remove any debris and create a fine tilth. If your garden soil is rich in nutrients, remove as much of it as you can and replace it with low nutrient topsoil.

Our Enviromat® Sedum Ground Mat Kits contain everything you need to create a beautiful and delightful ornamental ground cover which flowers from April to the end of October. It’s a truly stunning and very low maintenance alternative to a grass lawn. The foliage of our sedum ground mat kit is evergreen, beautifully textured and full of interest all year round.
Sedum ground mats are great for a sunny spot and are especially useful where the soil is very dry – or even non-existent. This means that you can create a luscious and beautiful area of foliage almost anywhere, bringing that space to life. As the mats are delivered with at least 95% plant coverage, you can rest assured that the finished project will look outstanding. All you need to do is place each slab onto a prepared surface and give them a good watering until established.
We seed our sedum ground mats with up to 18 different types of sedum, meaning that you get a wonderful mix of foliage to enjoy. The mats are then nurtured outdoors in our Norfolk based nursery for 9-12 months or until they are big and strong enough for despatch. Plant species are chosen for their disease resistance, drought tolerance, long flowering period and undeniable good looks, meaning that you will always get the best possible results.
The matting itself is specially made using recycled products, so you can also feel proud that you are helping to keep the environment healthier. It’s strong, easy to handle and designed to keep the growing medium (substrate) within the mat. Our sedum ground mats feature no loss of substrate due to handling, transportation or even heavy rain after installation. For that reason, sedum is great for sloping banks or for disguising manhole covers (the mat can be easily moved to allow access).
Sedums are drought tolerant and will only need an occasional watering during long spells of dry weather. Other than that, the only maintenance needed is an application of a specialist sedum feed every spring.

Traditional Meadowmat prefers to grow in full sun and moist, but well drained low fertility soil. So, it is happy on level surfaces or slopes. Happiest in a fairly neutral pH but will tolerate all but the most acidic or alkaline soils.
However, we strongly recommend sowing Meadowmat® seed onto our Low Fertility Soil as the high nutrient content of "normal" garden soil tends to skew the balance of grasses to flowering plants in Traditional Meadowmat and you may find that the resulting display is less colourful.
